Abuja, Nigeria – In a landmark move signaling Nigeria’s commitment to combating climate change, the Federal Government has announced ambitious plans to decarbonize the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja. This initiative marks a critical step towards a sustainable future for Nigerian aviation, aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental impact.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, emphasized the urgency of this transition, stating, “The challenge of climate change is not a distant theoretical concern; it is a present and pressing reality that demands decisive, concerted action.” He highlighted innovative solutions on the horizon, including group electrification of aprons and terminals, the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) corridors, and waste-to-energy projects to significantly slash emissions from airport operations.
The announcement came during a crucial stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, hosted by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Represented by Dr. Ibrahim Kana, the Minister underscored that for Nigeria, “embedding sustainability into the very core of our aviation infrastructure is not an option, it is an imperative for long term, resilient prosperity.”
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, echoed this sentiment, stressing the existential threat climate change poses to the global aviation industry. She affirmed FAAN’s unwavering commitment to decarbonization, revealing strategic measures already underway. Earlier assessments showed that electricity consumption accounted for a staggering 90% of total emissions at Lagos airport between 2017 and 2023. Lessons learned there are now being applied nationwide, with implementation of emission reduction measures already in progress for Lagos, and further actions planned during its terminal reconstruction and expansion.
“The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, is also important to us,” Mrs. Kuku stated, inviting collaboration. “We want to walk with you, and we need you to walk with us in our determination of net-zero emissions target in our airport operations.”
This proactive stride by Nigeria’s aviation sector is more than just an environmental initiative; it’s a blueprint for sustainable development, positioning the nation as a leader in Africa’s green energy transition.
